Herbs in Pregnancy

Here are the lists of herbs to avoid in pregnancy. All of these herbs are known to increase the chance of birth defects, premature labor, or miscarriage:
  • Aloes

  • Barberry

  • Black Cohosh

  • Bloodroot

  • Buckthorn

  • Casara Sagrada

  • Chinchona

  • Cotton root

  • Goldenseal

  • Juniper

  • Liferoot

  • Male fern

  • Pennyroyal

  • Pokeroot

  • Rue

  • Southernwood

  • Wormwood

  • Tansey

  • Mugwort

  • Thuja

  • Avoid any herb that is listed as an aborafant, emmenagogue or strong laxative.

However, we also have a few herbs that are beneficial in pregnancy

Red Raspberry leaf: tones the uterus, helps prevent miscarriage and postpartum hemorrhage. Eases morning sickness ( in some cases) provides vitamins A and B complex.

Stinging Nettles: good source of calcium, Vitamin K and will increase hemoglobin count. Rebuilds and strengthens kidneys, tones circulatory system and improves both quantity and quality of breast milk. Adrenal support...many other wonderful uses.

Alfalfa: source of calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, and just about all vitamins. Excellent for regaining and maintaining health.

Oatstraw: builds strong pliable bones. Rich in calcium and vitamins needs to utilize calcium. Helps stabilize blood sugar levels, helps with circulation problems, including varicose veins and hemorrhoids. Helps relieve stress.
