Because children who are victims are often too young or too frightened
to obtain protection for themselves from child abuse and neglect, they require
other persons to recognize the signs of maltreatment and make reports on
their behalf to appropriate authorities.
The Oral ReportWhen you make a call to report suspected abuse or neglect, the following information may be requested from you. If you lack some of this information, make the call anyway: The name and address of the child and his or her parent/caregiver; The child's age, gender and race; The family composition; The nature and extent of the child's injuries, abuse, or neglect, including any evidence of prior injury, abuse or neglect to the child or to his or her brothers and sisters; the name of the person allegedly responsible for causing the injury, abuse or neglect; the source of the report; the name, address, and telephone number of the person making the report (although you can choose to remain anonymous); any actions taken to prevent further abuse or neglect; other useful information.
If you suspect a child is the victim of abuse or neglect, please contact the local reporting agency in your community. Below is a list of state agencies that can help you contact your local agency. If your state is not listed below, please call your local state agency to access the number. Please do not hesitate to report suspected abuse to a child. Your call can save a life.
