These cases represent only a minute percentage of children who are abused, neglected, abducted or murdered in the United States each year. According to the National Committee to Prevent Child Abuse, more than 3,000,000 children were reported as abused or neglected to child protective agencies in the United States and, of that number, 1,054,000 children were confirmed as victims of child maltreatment. These statistics do not include the children abducted, abused and/or murdered by strangers.

It's a problem that can only be conquered by the efforts of an informed public working to end the maltreatment of children. By increasing our awareness of child abuse, we are better able to protect children by:

• being better able to choose child care providers for our children and to spot the signs of maltreatment by child care workers
• empowering parents by teaching parents how to protect their child from sexual exploitation
• learning the common approaches used to lure children and safety tips to prevent abduction or improve the chances of recovery if your child is abducted
• being better able to spot the signs of abuse or neglect among children we know professionally or socially so that help may be afforded to these children at the earliest possible stage
• learning how to respond to a child disclosing sexual abuse or other forms of abuse
• learning how to report child abuse

This is important information to know. It is information that could save a life. It is information that could help prevent harm to a child you know and love. Child abuse prevention is everyone's responsibility.
